Loreto High School

Project: Loreto High School
Capital Value: £9m
Client: Manchester City Council
Procurement: Framework 109
Contractor: Bramall Construction Ltd
Architect: Ellis Williams Architects

Description

This project comprised 90% refurbishment of existing buildings with some new build entrances.  The High School remained in full operation throughout the works.  Work was planned and then phased and integrated with the school operation.  Detailed discussions were held with the users to minimise disruption and to ensure that the services were maintained at all times.

There were asbestos issues to overcome with regard to replacing the radiator system and in order to accelerate the programme an all air system was designed which makes use of air source heat pumps.  This highly energy efficient solution was achieved within normal cost parameters and was phased to maximise occupation of the building.

Design & Planning Issues

The client wanted to meet Manchester’s planning Guidance (Guide to Development 2) which requires carbon emissions 25% better than Part L.

BCM’s design achieved an energy rating which is 36% better than the Part L 2006 standards for new build.
